Moving to Hove

Hove sits immediately west of Brighton, and the two towns run into each other without a clear border, though technically they're both part of the city of Brighton & Hove. Locals will still tell you Hove has its own, calmer identity: fewer stag and hen parties, more prams, and a seafront that's slightly wider and quieter than Brighton's.

What daily life looks like

The seafront promenade runs the length of the town and is the default route for running, cycling, and dog walking. Church Road is the main shopping and café strip, running from Hove station area down towards Brunswick Town, with independent shops mixed in among the usual high-street names. Hove Park adds a second, greener focal point further north.

Who tends to move here

• Families: drawn by more space than central Brighton, good parks, and access to a mix of state and independent schools
• Commuters: Hove station has direct services to London, so it works for people who need to be in the city a few days a week
• Downsizers: flats in the seafront conversions offer a lower-maintenance alternative to a family house, without leaving the area

How it compares to Brighton

Expect a quieter pace, wider residential streets, and (in most areas) a bit more house for your money than equivalent Brighton postcodes, though seafront Hove commands its own premium. Brighton's nightlife, Lanes shopping, and station are all a short bus ride or a 20-30 minute walk away, so you're not giving up access to it.

• Parking: most residential streets are permit-zoned; check zone and availability before assuming you'll get a permit
